Old City / Rattanakosin
Bangkok's historic heart — Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Khao San Road. The MRT Blue Line's western terminus (Sanam Chai, Itsaraphap) finally brings rail to this area. Riverside guesthouses, golden temples, and the backpacker capital of Southeast Asia.
Where is Old City / Rattanakosin?
The Old City is where Bangkok began — Rattanakosin Island, formed by a canal dug around the Grand Palace in 1782. This is the Bangkok of postcards: golden temple spires, saffron-robed monks, and the Chao Phraya River glittering at sunset. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha), and Wat Arun are all within walking distance of each other. Khao San Road, the legendary backpacker street, is a 15-minute walk north — cheap beer, pad thai from carts, and travelers from every country. The MRT Blue Line's western extension finally brings rail here: Sanam Chai station (an underground palace itself) is your gateway. Stay here for culture, history, and lower prices — but the airport is further away than Sukhumvit. The temple triangle rewards a plan: enter the Grand Palace early (08:30) to beat both heat and tour buses, dress code enforced (shoulders and knees covered), then walk ten minutes south to Wat Pho while the compound is still cool — the Reclining Buddha fills an entire hall end to end, and the massage school on the grounds is the lineage's home. From Wat Pho's rear gate, the Tha Tien pier puts you on a 5-baht cross-river ferry to Wat Arun; climb its porcelain-studded prang late afternoon when the sun swings round and the river turns bronze behind you. Between temples, the old-town lanes reward detours: the artist studios and cafés around Khlong Bang Lamphu, the amulet market near Wat Mahathat, and the riverside the Deck by Arun Residence at sunset, when Wat Arun's floodlights click on across the water. Khao San has softened into something more interesting than its backpacker reputation — the parallel Soi Rambuttri is the calmer, greener version with the same cheap beer and better food carts. Who it suits: first-time visitors who came for the Bangkok of the postcards, history buffs, photographers, and budget travelers — guesthouse and mid-range rates here undercut Sukhumvit noticeably. What to avoid: the 'temple is closed' tuk-tuk scam working the palace gates (a genuine classic — the driver offers a substitute 'special temple' that is a gem or suit shop), midday heat on the open palace esplanade, and assuming the district is walkable after dark: streets empty quickly and the riverside is best reached by boat or metered taxi. Note the MRT's new stations are true deep-level platforms — allow five extra minutes on the escalators. For BKK: take MRT to Phaya Thai via the Blue Line loop, then transfer to ARL (45 min). For the river: walk to Tha Tien pier and take the Chao Phraya Express boat (15 THB).
- Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha)
- Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha, 46m long)
- Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn, riverside)
- Khao San Road (backpacker central)
- Museum of Siam
Food: The Old City has the best traditional Thai food in Bangkok. Pad thai at Thip Samai (the original, since 1966), boat noodles along the canal, and mango sticky rice at the Tha Tien market. For rooftop views, the Deck by Arun Residence overlooks Wat Arun.
Transit: MRT Sanam Chai is the closest station to the Grand Palace (10 min walk). MRT Hua Lamphong (old railway terminal) is on the eastern edge. For BKK: take MRT to Phaya Thai via the Blue Line loop, then transfer to ARL (45 min). For the river: walk to Tha Tien pier and take the Chao Phraya Express boat (15 THB).
