Where is Sukhumvit?

Sukhumvit Road stretches over 20 km and is the spine of Bangkok's tourist infrastructure. The BTS Skytrain runs above it the entire way, making it the most transit-connected area in the city. Lower-numbered sois (1-21) are where you'll find the high-end hotels — JW Marriott, Westin, Sheraton Grande. Mid-sois (31-55) are the trendy Thonglor and Ekkamai area with Japanese restaurants and cocktail bars. Further out (On Nut, Bang Na) you'll find budget guesthouses and authentic street food at local prices. Sukhumvit is the safest bet for first-time visitors: you can always find English speakers, Western food, and ATMs. The trade-off is higher prices and more crowds. Street by street the moods change. Terminal 21 at Asok packs a world trip into nine themed floors — its pier-side food court does dishes from every Thai region for under 60 baht, which is why office workers queue there too. Benjakitti Park, rebuilt around a long boardwalk loop over the lake, is the district's green lung and its best free sunset; a new skywalk now reaches toward Lumphini. Soi Cowboy keeps its neon gate glowing past midnight — compact and comparatively tame beside Nana's intensity one stop north — while Soi 11 remains the social midpoint of the whole road, its bars full from dusk. For deeper eating, Soi 38's famous night lanes have largely moved indoors; the night markets now carry the script, and the weekend crowds flow between them on the BTS rather than on Sukhumvit Road itself. Who it suits: first-time visitors above all, mixed-agenda groups, shoppers, and long-stay expats who want everything on one rail line — this is the neighborhood where 'a week in Bangkok and never needed a taxi' is genuinely achievable. What to avoid: renting a car (parking is scarce and the road clogs solid after 4pm), the tuk-tuk 'grand temple tours' working Nana's corners that detour to gem and suit shops — a firm, smiling 'no thanks' is the complete response — and paying Sukhumvit prices for dishes you could eat for half two sois off the main road. For transit detail: the MRT Blue Line at Asok puts Chinatown ten minutes away, Chatuchak's weekend market is an unbroken 25-minute BTS ride to Mo Chit, and trains run until around midnight. For airport access, take the BTS to Phaya Thai and transfer to the ARL — 35 minutes to BKK.

Food: Sukhumvit has every cuisine imaginable. For street food, head to Soi 38 (though it's been gentrified — try the night markets instead). Soi 11 has backpacker-friendly restaurants. Thonglor (Soi 55) has Bangkok's best Japanese restaurants and craft cocktail bars.

Transit: BTS Sukhumvit line runs the entire length. Transfer to ARL at Phaya Thai for BKK airport (35 min). Transfer to MRT Blue at Asok for the underground metro. Traffic on Sukhumvit Road itself is terrible — always use the BTS.
